A collaborative platform between Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)
Indian ports have a decisive role to play in country’s endeavours towards de-carbonization. In this regard, green initiatives would be the prerequisite for realization of this ambitious objective.
In addition, the initiatives must be in sync with the broad vision of the country and strengthen the efforts on a national scale, in moving towards achieving India’s long-term goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2070.
To reinforce the country’s attempt in this transition, TERI shall develop a road map to enable Indian major ports to become green, sustainable, and viable by increasing renewable energy generation and utilization, principally sourced from solar, wind, and advanced energy solutions.
TERI has expertise to ensure air quality improvement by improving the usage of clean fuels and other measures at ports. Proposals shall be put in place for developing water treatment infrastructure and employing water conservation techniques across the ports. Improving solid waste management is another dimension where TERI can introduce noteworthy amelioration. This will necessarily comprise including effective waste segregation, recycling and reuse, and promoting waste-to-wealth that are in alignment with Swachh Bharat Mission. Employing sustainable dredging disposal mechanism to improve dredging material that is recycled and reused at ports would be vital step.
Establishing a zero-accident safety initiative through maintaining safety in critical areas like risk assessment, secure equipment handling procedures, re-engineering, and fostering a culture of safety and training can greatly contribute to making ports more environmentally friendly.
