Harit Nauka Inland Vessels Green Transition Guidelines
Author(s):
Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India
Abstract:
Charting a course for cleaner waters and a greener future, the Harit Nauka Inland Vessels Green Transition Guidelines aim to transform India's inland navigation sector. This initiative by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways seeks to not only boost the industry's modal share but also significantly reduce its environmental impact. The plan outlines a phased adoption of cleaner technologies like LNG and biofuels for both new and existing vessels, alongside promoting energy-efficient practices and optimized operations. Building green ports with infrastructure for alternative fuels and waste disposal is another key aspect, fostering a supportive ecosystem for the transition. Financial incentives and skill development programs aim to address potential hurdles like high initial investment costs and workforce adaptation. By embracing these guidelines, India's inland waterways stand to witness cleaner air, reduced emissions, and a more sustainable transportation system, paving the way for a thriving and environmentally responsible IWT sector.
