Water safety signs and beach safety flags — Part 3: Guidance for use

Author(s):

Technical Committee ISO/TC 145, Graphical symbols, Subcommittee SC 2, Safety identification, signs, shapes, symbols and colours.

Abstract:

The use of beach safety flags and water safety signs was demonstrated in this publication. The drawings provided examples of the placement and choice of beach safety flags and water safety signs intended to alert people about aquatic dangers and the steps that should be taken to avoid them. The process of education and instruction regarding the meaning of water safety signs and beach safety flags, as well as the proper actions to take, was made easier with the use of a standardized technique of signing and the use of relevant supplementary text across the working and public environments. The goal of this document was to guarantee that water safety signs and beach safety flags were applied consistently, increasing familiarity among users, including tourists and members of the general public, and ultimately improving safety.The graphics in this text were created with the idea that some readers would not be familiar with the characteristics of beaches or indoor or outdoor swimming pools. The drawings should be seen as suggestions rather than minimum requirements because they weren't meant to cover every scenario that might be dangerous.The use of beach safety flags and water safety signs wouldn't take the place of the requirement for safe working practices, safety education, training in accident prevention and what to do in an emergency, or the presence of lifeguards.
