The shipping sector is one of the major transport sectors that accounts for more than 80% goods transport via waterways. The sector consumes nearly 400 million tonnes of fuel per annum and stands responsible for 3% of the total global carbon emissions. Surprisingly, the use of carbon-neutral fuels in the shipping sector has been minimal. There is a substantial need to develop pathways for decarbonization of the marine sector. In this regard, adoption of renewable transport fuels such as biofuels has emerged as a positive shift. Marine vessels primarily use heavy fuel oil (HFO) and marine diesel oil (MDO). Use of biofuels such as straight vegetable oil (SVO), biodiesel, and biobutanol in marine transportation sector is a short- to medium-term strategy, viable in decarbonizing the marine sector. However, faster adoption of biofuels will require development of standards in line with the global marine fuel standards. To determine the fuel property standards of biofuels and create blending standards suitable for the utilization of biofuels in current marine engines.
