Wind Power

In line with Maritime India Vision 2030, there are more than 150 initiatives identified with a broad vision of sustainable growth and development to be implemented across the country’s entire port sector including both major and minor ports.

India has set a target to achieve 40% national energy through renewable sources by 2030. For realization of this goal, Indian ports need to be in adherence with International Marine Organization’s alignment to UN SDG 9 which includes obligations on safe, efficient and sustainable ports.

Along with Sun, the gusts too can be made to move in favour of ports’ sustainable development with appropriate installation of wind farms, such as near breakwater and all along the port premises on the basis of wind direction in fallow land and shallow waters, in and around the port stretch.

In accordance with the Green Port Guidelines and Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030, three major ports—Deendayal Port, VO Chidambaranar Port, and Kamarajar Port—have recently signed deals for utilizing wind energy.  A road map shall be prepared for achieving 20% year-by-year growth with initial planning for conventional wind turbines. Letting the wind to flip the ports to the green side could be achieved by installing both on-shore and off-shore wind farms, after duly recognizing the ecologically and economically feasible areas.

TERI has extensive scope and expertise in effectively carrying out identification of the proposal, need assessment study, preparation of respective project reports, followed by implementation to match with the well-established national and international benchmarks.
